Field Hockey Played Lebanon Tough but Came UP Short

The Lady Spartans field hockey team put up a valiant fight in a makeup game yesterday afternoon against Lebanon High School, falling just one goal short in a thrilling 5-4 loss.

The game began with Lebanon striking early, netting one goal in the first quarter and another early in the second. After that, both teams settled into an intense back-and-forth rhythm. The Spartans midfielders and forwards found their stride, working cohesively to push the ball deep into Lebanon’s circle multiple times.

Senior Willa Audley broke the scoring drought for Milford, deflecting a beautiful pass from sophomore Emma Freeman into the cage. Lebanon quickly responded with another goal, but the Spartans refused to back down. Junior Paige Bernier fired a powerful shot to close the gap, sending the teams into halftime with Lebanon narrowly ahead.

The third quarter saw both sides locked in a defensive stalemate. In the fourth, Lebanon struck again to extend their lead, but Bernier answered swiftly with her second goal of the game, bringing the score to 3–4. Lebanon capitalized once more late in the quarter, but the Spartans fought to the final whistle—Bernier completing her hat trick with a brilliant shot just three seconds before the buzzer.

Though the final score favored Lebanon, 5–4, the Lady Spartans showed immense heart and determination. Freshman Lily Webster and Bernier led with standout performances, displaying exceptional teamwork and effort. Audley’s steady offensive presence continued to anchor the attack, while Lea Lyons, Allie Cardin, and Violet Renda provided critical support in both the midfield and defensive zones. Renda’s willingness to step out of goal and contribute on the field once again showcased her selfless dedication to the team.

Defensively, Nadia Dutton and Kate Kilmer stood strong, helping to hold off Lebanon’s relentless offense. In goal, Norah Cardin added an impressive 17 saves to her record, keeping the Spartans within striking distance all game long.

The Lady Spartans may have come up short on the scoreboard, but their unity, grit, and refusal to quit made this one of their most inspiring performances yet.

Today, the Field Hockey Team is back in action against John Stark Regional at 4 pm at the Jacques Field.
